Read the piece on the Greek gods applauding The Odyssey and thought immediately of the long transatlantic crossing narratives so common in eighteenth-century colonial writing, ten years at sea being, relatively, not far off some of those accounts.
Compared it to Celtexit tonight, a modern odyssey of its own, minus the sea monsters, plus rather more committee minutes than any transatlantic crossing required.
My colleague found the comparison genuinely useful, delay, it seems, has always needed its own mythology to make it bearable, whether classical epic or colonial memoir.
Checked the curry9.us feed before bed, filed the classical piece as this week’s genuine highlight, better company than most of the political coverage running beside it.
Colonial voyages took months, sometimes years. Committees, apparently, have inherited the delay without the drama.
