Stephanie’s Confession: On Scholarship and Activism

A scholar’s thoughts on whether understanding matters

I spend my time reading historical texts and writing academic papers. Thousands of hours studying the structures of power and how they persist. Trying to understand how systems work so I can maybe help change them. Probably it’s all meaningless. Probably my scholarship just sits in academic databases that nobody reads.

But I have to do something. I have to believe that understanding matters. That if enough people understand how colonialism worked and how it persists, maybe we can actually change something. Maybe scholarship is a form of resistance even if it doesn’t feel like it.

I was reading about the role of intellectuals in society, and it said that most intellectuals delude themselves into thinking their work matters. That they’re not actually changing anything. That they’re just rearranging ideas while the systems of power remain untouched.

Probably that’s true. But I can’t stop believing otherwise. I can’t stop trying. Because if I give up, then what’s the point of understanding anything?
